Arlington Million Day

It was another great day at Arlington Park. Arlington Park is one of my favorite tracks in the country. Arlington Million Race Day always brings a wonderful racing day with a mix of european and american thoroughbreds ready to battle, to see who is the best of best, in turf racing. The sun was out big time. I thought it was hot when I left New York at 6am, but when I landed in Chicago the sun was glaring even more. All day between races, we drank lots of water and found spots in the shade to cool off when we could. I always love coming here because I get to hang out with the starter, Blue Knott, and his crew. All week I had checked the weather and it said that it would be hot, with no chance of rain. Well between the 8th and 9th race, oh boy, did it rain. My Dad and I went from sweating to wet and cold. As the Million approched, the rain drifted away. The turf began to dry off slowly for the biggest race of the day. The sun began to inch out too, as you can see in the above picture. The Horse Pizza Man took home the biggest prize of the day, winning the Million. The name reminded me of the pizza I had just shared with the gate crew earlier. Despite the heat and the rain, it was just another day at the track, and in my book, any day at the track is a great day. After the races we drove downtown and stayed in the city. We went to Joe's to enjoy some stone crabs and to reminisce about the day, another succesful trip. I've really started to embrace a track like Arlington Park. Just standing in the paddock area, you look up and around and you feel like your in small a coliseum. Its a unbelievable sight to see and place to be. You really take in the moment. I really hope the racing situation in Illinois gets better because I hope to come back to many more hot days in August. See you soon Arlington!!
