Songbird introduces herself at Saratoga, and California Chrome starts a rivalry with Dortmund

This past weekend horse racing fans got the chance to see some amazing horses. On the East Coast at the opening weekend of Saratoga Race Track, Songbird won the Coaching Club American Oaks. She looked great and Mike Smith, her jockey, didn't have to ask too much of her. Songbird is expected to run later in August in the Alabama Stakes. I think there she will show us that she can handle a mile and quarter and after that she may be ready to take on the boys later in the fall at the Breeders Cup. On the West Coast, it was opening weekend at Del Mar Race Track. California Chrome faced off with Dortmund in the San Diego Handicap. Dortmund made California Chrome work hard for his win. He led until the final turn where California Chrome then pushed ahead, but Dortmund kept fighting. California Chrome edged Dortmund by a half length for the victory. After this epic race we should hopefully see a rematch between the two later in summer at Del Mar in the Pacific Classic. There's plenty more in store this summer and I can't wait to watch as I still believe there will be an amazing amount of talent to face off against each other in the fall at Santa Anita's Breeders Cup, but until then we'll keep enjoying the great summer racing.
