Gun Runner takes the Breeders Cup Classic @ DMTC

As we coasted along the County Highway 21 leaving the track at Del Mar, I looked out the window and here's what I saw. It pretty much summed up Breeders' Cup weekend of the first time hosts, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. As expected, the weather was phenomenal. And on opening day of where the turf meets the surf summer meet, the people and scene usually dominate the day. Here at the Breeders Cup, the challengers, the horses were in charge of this weekends racing scene. The first day was highlighted by Battle of Midway at 14-1 upsetting Sharp Azteca, Mor Spirit in the Dirt Mile, the team of Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore winning on Mendelssohn, and finally, Forever Unbridled winning the Distaff in a loaded field that included Elate, Stellar Wind, Abel Tasman, and Paradise Woods. The second day was the day of long shots topping the board. Those horses that provided great excitement and crazy prices were Caladonia Road, Stormy Liberal, Wuheida, Good Magic, Talismanic, and Bar of Gold which paid a whopping $135.40. As the Classic approached you thought it would be a wide open race with the likes of Arrogate, Collected, West Coast, and Gun Runner involved. Which one of these amazing horses was going to have one more amazing run in the sun in 2017? That horse was Gun Runner. From the start it looked like it was going to be a match race between Gun Runner and Collected. West Coast never caught up with them, and it just wasn't Arrogate's day. On Arrogate and Mike Smith's last ride, all i can say is thank you. You were great for the sport of horse racing, and you will deeply missed. It was a pleasure watching you race and thank you. As per our winner, Gun Runner. Simply amazing. I cannot wait to see you run one more time at the Pegasus. Will the Pegasus be another match race between Gun Runner and Collected? Will West Coast who is peaking as the best 3 year old in the country finally be ready to run these 4 year olds down? Only time will tell. Thanks again to DMTC and the Breeders Cup for a wonderful racing weekend and see you next time down in sunny Miami at The Pegasus.
